Helicopter flight, glacier walk
Fly by helicopter over the Chugach Mountains and land directly on the surface of the Matanuska Glacier, the largest glacier accessible by road in the United States. This one-hour tour takes you far beyond the crowds at the glacier's toe, landing beside a vivid blue glacial pool in a remote section of ice where few people ever set foot. After landing, your pilot guides you on an extended walk across the glacier, where you explore crevasses, seracs, and ice formations while taking in sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and the 27-mile river of ice stretching into the distance.
This is the fastest and most dramatic way to experience the Matanuska Glacier, combining aerial views of the entire ice field with time on the ground in a location that is completely inaccessible on foot.
Minimum of 2 and maximum of 3 guests per flight. Participants must be at least 3 years old. No individual guest may weigh more than 300 lbs, and the combined group weight (excluding the pilot) must be under 675 lbs. Wear closed-toe shoes; hiking boots are recommended for the glacier walk. Bring only small backpacks. Micro spikes for ice traction are provided. The helicopter cabin is climate controlled. For the best photographs, wear dark-colored clothing to reduce reflections off the helicopter windows. Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled departure. The Matanuska Glacier creates its own microclimate, often with sunnier skies and warmer temperatures than surrounding areas, but dress in layers and bring sunglasses.
This is a typical itinerary for this helicopter tour and glacier walk. The total experience is approximately 1 hour.
Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled departure at Sheep Mountain Air, located at 17701 Glenn Highway, Chickaloon, AK 99674, approximately 2 hours northeast of Anchorage along the scenic Glenn Highway. The drive from Anchorage follows the Matanuska River through the Matanuska Valley, with views of the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains along the way. At the helipad, your pilot reviews the flight plan, provides a safety briefing, and distributes personal headsets for in-flight communication and narration.
You lift off from Sheep Mountain and fly directly toward the Matanuska Glacier. The helicopter climbs over the Matanuska River valley, and within minutes the glacier fills the view below: 27 miles of ice flowing from the peaks of the Chugach Mountains down to the valley floor. From the air, you see the full scale of the Matanuska Glacier, features that are invisible from the ground, including deep crevasse fields, towering seracs, meltwater channels carved into the ice surface, and the vivid blue pools that form as winter snow melts in the early summer. Your pilot narrates the flight through your headset, pointing out mountain peaks, ice formations, and wildlife sighting opportunities. The Matanuska Glacier functions as a natural "weather hole" that pushes warm valley air upward, often creating sunny, clear conditions even when surrounding areas are overcast.
The helicopter lands on a remote section of white ice far from the glacier's terminus, in an area accessible only by air. You step out onto the surface of the Matanuska Glacier beside a vibrant blue glacial pool, formed by meltwater collecting in depressions in the ice. Your pilot provides micro spikes for traction and leads you on a guided walk across the glacier. You explore the immediate area around the landing site, walking past crevasses, ice ridges, and formations shaped by the glacier's constant movement. The Matanuska Glacier advances at approximately one foot per day and is continuously reshaping its surface, meaning the features you see on any given day are unique. Your pilot explains the geology of the glacier, the forces that created it, and how the landscape continues to change. You have time to touch the crystal-clear glacial water, photograph the blue pools and ice formations, and take in the panoramic views of the surrounding Chugach Mountains before the return flight.
After the glacier walk, you reboard the helicopter for the scenic flight back to Sheep Mountain Air.

The Matanuska Glacier is a 27-mile-long valley glacier flowing from the Chugach Mountains into the Matanuska Valley, roughly 100 miles northeast of Anchorage along the Glenn Highway. It is the largest glacier accessible by car in the United States, with a terminus 4 miles wide that is visible from the highway. But the toe of the glacier, where most visitors hike with ground-based tour companies, represents only a fraction of the ice field. The vast majority of the Matanuska Glacier, including its most spectacular blue pools, deep crevasse fields, and remote ice formations, is accessible only by air.
This helicopter tour takes you past the crowds and onto the glacier's backcountry, landing on white ice in a section that few people ever reach. The vivid blue glacial pools that form in early summer are among the most photographed features on the Matanuska Glacier, created when snowmelt collects in hollows and the dense glacier ice reflects blue light back through the water. From the landing site, the guided walk gives you time to explore the surface on foot with micro spikes, feeling the texture of the ice underfoot and hearing the creaks and groans of a glacier that is actively moving. The flight itself is part of the experience: the helicopter's full-panel windows give you an unobstructed view of the entire glacier, the river valley below, and the mountain peaks of the Chugach Range.
This Matanuska Glacier helicopter tour is ideal for families (minimum age 3), couples, photographers, and anyone visiting Alaska who wants to experience a glacier from a perspective that combines the thrill of flight with the intimacy of walking on ice. It is also a practical choice for travelers with limited time, delivering a complete glacier experience in approximately one hour.
Mark and his team have built something truly special here, and it shows in every aspect of the experience. As owner and pilot, Mark clearly loves what he does, sharing his passion for Alaska's glaciers through smooth, cinematic flights that put even nervous flyers at ease. The tours include actual glacier landings where you can walk on ancient ice, explore blue meltwater pools, and take in views that guests consistently describe as life-changing. Wildlife sightings of moose and bears add an extra thrill to the journey. What really stands out is the personal, family-run feel of the operation. Multiple couples chose this provider for their elopement packages, praising Mark's skills as pilot, photographer, and officiant all in one. The staff goes above and beyond to accommodate special requests and fix booking mix-ups, treating each guest like they genuinely matter. First-time helicopter riders feel safe and cared for, while adventure seekers get customized routes to see exactly what they want. This is consistently called the highlight of people's Alaska trips, and the enthusiasm in these reviews makes it easy to see why.
Can’t express how magical this experience was. Mark and his wife were incredible hosts to our young family (brought a 1 and 3 year old on board). They were great with kids and made the experience all the better by just getting how to handle getting their spikes on so they could walk on the ice, and guiding us safely through the caves. The tour was educational and fun too with stories and fun facts. Additionally, Mark has a photography background and was able to coach me on my video I was taking for a project (stills from the videos attached) - thanks again for the incredible tour!
