See the Tillamook Coast in fall on a round-trip vintage train ride from Rockaway Beach to Wheeler, with coastal forest and bay views along the way. Enjoy on-board narration and time to explore Wheeler during your layover.
The train is not wheelchair accessible at Rockaway Beach and Wheeler stations, and you must be able to climb steps. There are no restrooms on board; use facilities before boarding or during the Wheeler layover. Dogs and small pets are allowed only in outdoor cars; only task-trained service animals are allowed in indoor cars.
Tickets once purchased, are non-refundable. They may, however, be exchanged for another date for the same excursion type within the same calendar year.
Please arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. Boarding begins at least 15 minutes prior to departure, and the train departs at the beginning of the listed time range.
Check-in takes place on board the train. Line up at the boarding gate with the sign labeled “Outbound Reservations,” and have your confirmation available or provide the first and last name on the reservation. Staff will direct you to your assigned car.
Seat switching may not be available due to limited seating. Please sit only in the car you’re assigned to.
Rockaway Beach Station
Most travelers absolutely love this vintage train experience, praising the friendly staff and beautiful coastal scenery you can't quite appreciate while driving. The narration hits the sweet spot of being informative without overdoing it, and guests enjoy choosing between different car types based on their preferences. The relaxed pace lets you soak in panoramic ocean views, though you'll want to pick your seat carefully since the train reverses rather than turning around. A few practical things to know: delays can happen, so build some flexibility into your day. The vintage cars are authentically small and cozy, which some find charming and others find cramped. The route runs alongside the highway rather than through wilderness, and there aren't bathrooms onboard. One reviewer mentioned the ride can be bumpy for those with back issues. Wheeler, the turnaround point, is quite small with limited activities during the wait. Despite these quirks, most guests find it a memorable way to experience the Oregon coast and say they'd happily ride again.
We had an awesome time on the train, we did the candy cane express for Christmas and it was so fun. We also took our dog who loved it. The staff was friendly , the ride as comfortable and the scenery was beautiful!
